About the Labradoodle Breed
Australian Labradoodles
We breed Australian Labradoodles and are members of WALA (Worldwide Australian Labradoodles Association).
The Australian Labradoodles were originally bred in the 1980s with the intent of creating the perfect guide dog. The intent was to create an allergy and asthma friendly dog with low to non-shedding coats and the temperament of a guide dog. Throughout the 1990s breeders in Australia continued to breed Labradoodles to produce litters with consistent conformation, coat type, and temperament. In the late 90s, several other types of dogs were bred into the Labradoodle line to assist in this effort. Currently, the Australian Labradoodle is considered a cross between a Poodle, Cocker Spaniel and Labrador Retriever, while a Labradoodle is considered a cross between a Labrador Retriever and Poodle only.
Coat patterns in the Australian Labradoodle include:
All solid colours
Colours of parchment, lavender, coffee and chocolate may have dark amber eyes; liver noses, eye rims and lips; and dark nails.
Apricot coloured dogs may have dark amber to pale hazel-green eyes; liver noses, eye rims and lips; and self-coloured to dark nails.
Colours of red, black, blue and silver must have very dark eyes; black noses, eye rims and lips; and black or self-coloured nails.
Colours of white and cream may have either pigmentation of dark amber to pale hazel-green eyes; liver noses, eye rims and lips; and self-coloured to dark nails or very dark eyes; black noses, eye rims and lips; and black or self-coloured nails.
Phantom colouring is a mix of black, coffee and sometimes white; similar to a brindle colour found in other breeds.
Fleece coats tend to feel softer and can be straight, wavy or curly. Soft Angora type texture wavy or loose spiraling coat and will need to be brushed/combed thoroughly every 3 days. This coat also requires trimming. A full grooming needs to be done every 6-8 weeks. This is our most preferred coat type by clients and ourselves. We have found most fleece coats to be allergy-friendly.
Wool coats can be soft but are very curly. The wool coats are very dense and have a lambs wool texture. This coat is reminiscent of a giant cotton ball when groomed out and is so dense that it almost keeps it self standing straight up. This coat is an allergy and asthma friendly coat with the highest rate of success of the three coat types (Hair/Fleece/Wool). It will need to be brushed/combed thoroughly every 3 days. This coat also requires trimming. A full grooming needs to be done every 6-8 weeks.
Hair coats has odor and sheds in varying degrees. It is most like the coat type of Labradors. It is usually seen in early generation dogs such as the first cross of a lab and poodle, F1b, and F2b Labradoodles. This is not an allergy-friendly coat.
We choose an Australian Labradoodle for our family because of the consistent temperament, ease of training and allergy friendly aspects of the breed. This consistency found across the breed is from years of selective breeding in the Australian Labradoodle line.
