Pee Breaks

Every 15-20 minutes while your puppy is awake and playing. Stay outside with them and be boring while they go and wait until they do go to come back in. Clean up with 1/2 water and white vinegar and bring accidents outside with a positive voice and calm pee pee and poo poo outside and put the accident in their area where you want them to go.

We recommend setting up a Latrine area so your puppy does not use your entire backyard as their potty area

We recommend getting a 3 foot height to prevent climbers.

FAQs – Feeding and vaccinations for my new puppy.

Feeding:

·         We are proponents of scheduled feeding and recommend that you consider it for your new puppy. Scheduled feeding virtually eliminates food guarding if you have multiple dogs as well as picky eaters from grazing.  It is also very important to not underfeed your dog during the first year as your puppy will be very active and will need plenty of food for growth.

·         Puppies will need 3 meals a day up to 6 months of age and than you can do 2 meals a day. Follow the feed guidelines on the side of your dog food bag for amounts.

·         We are fans of Now and Acana wheat free dog food and raw

For training treats we love Old Mother Hubbard’s Bitz training treats. These are dry and come in several flavors and our dogs love them! See http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/product.aspx?pid=20

·         We do recommend that you remove all the food from your puppy’s reach by 6 pm as this will speed up potty training.

Also no water past 8 pm as this prevents pee accidents. Free range on water from 6:30 am until 8 pm while they are a puppy.

Preventative Care:

·         We have started the vaccination and wormer series for your puppy but you will have to finish the series with your veterinarian.

·         Please bring your puppy health record with its stickers and dates from your packet to your veterinarian to add to your puppy’s chart.

·         Your puppy received their DHPP vaccination at around 6/1/2 weeks. Your puppy will need a booster at 10 weeks, 14 weeks and rabies at 16 weeks. Your vet may recommend Corona and Leptospirosis vaccinations based on what is common in your area.

·         One year from your last set of vaccinations you will need to book an appointment to have a follow up vaccinations which are good for three years. Every year you will need to do a health check and can ask for flea/tick preventative mediation during March- September/October as those months in Alberta have a higher chance for your puppy/dog picking it up.

·         Your puppy should get a rabies vaccination close to 6 months of age. This will be good for one year and then should be followed at one year from the last puppy series with a three-year booster shot.

·         Your puppy received wormer at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks and should continue the wormer series at 12 and 16 weeks of age. If you have young children we recommend a monthly dewormer that you can get from your vet such as Strongid-t. Dose is based on weight and your vet can guide you to proper dose amounts by weighting your puppy.  Revolution is also great during the warmer months as a monthly dewormer but talk to your vet about this.

·         If you live outside of Alberta monthly heart dewormer is recommended by our vet and yours will also recommend a regular treatment of this.

Socializing and outdoor activities with your puppy:

·         We strongly recommend against starting training with other dogs or play time outside of your yard until your puppy is fully immunized at 4 months. Parvo is very real and your puppy will not be immune until he/she completes the series.

·         Dogs or puppies you know that are healthy and have had all their shots may be an option for good socialization. Remember just like people that not all dogs will be bff so it’s ok if their personalities are different or they have differences. Good socialization and positive exposure to stimuli is key. So pick children or a variety of adults that will respect your puppies space and be kind.

·         As you can see from our videos, our puppies are socialized with adult dogs very early. They will not have any fear in approaching a strange dog and trying to play. Supervise your puppy’s first meet-ups with other dogs in your home until your other dog(s) are used to their new family member.

Desex Surgery between 6-8 months of age.

Book this when you do your third puppy vaccine at your vet office. We recommend the soft cones or surgical suit vs the hard plastic cones.

Thanks!
